Youri Tielemans-Anderlecht

Tielemans is an Anderlecht youth product who signed his first professional contract with the club at the age of 16.

On 21 July 2013, he was named to the senior squad for the first time, but he did not play in the 1-0 win over Genk in the 2013 Belgian Super Cup.

A week later, he made his first-team debut against Lokeren in the first round of the Belgian Pro League season, replacing the injured Sacha Kljestan after 25 minutes of a 2-3 home loss. This made him the league’s fourth-youngest player in history.

He became the youngest Belgian player to play in the UEFA Champions League on October 2, 2013, when he made his debut against Olympiacos at the age of 16 years and 148 days.

He appeared in 29 games, making 21 starts, as Anderlecht won the Belgian Pro League in 2013-14, scoring the opening goal in a 3-0 win over Club Brugge at the Constant Vanden Stock Stadium on 6 April 2014, a game in which he also assisted Cyriac. Tielemans was named Belgium’s Young Player of the Year in both of his first two seasons.

Tielemans scored 13 goals in 37 games for Anderlecht in the 2016-17 Belgian First Division A season. He was named Belgian Professional Footballer of the Year in 2016-17 and won the 2017 Ebony Shoe Award for best player of African origin. He scored 5 goals in 15 UEFA Europa League matches in 2016-17, helping his club reach the quarter-finals, and was named to its Squad of the Season.

Youri Tielemans-Monaco

Tielemans signed a five-year contract with 2016-17 Ligue 1 champions Monaco on May 24, 2017 for a fee of around €25 million. On July 29, he made his competitive debut at the Grand Stade de Tanger in the Trophée des Champions, playing the full 90 minutes in a 2-1 loss to Paris Saint-Germain and assisting Djibril Sidibé’s opening goal.

Tielemans made his Ligue 1 debut on August 4th, coming on as a substitute for Radamel Falcao in the 87th minute in a 3-2 home win over Toulouse. On September 13, he made his UEFA club competition debut for Monaco in a UEFA Champions League group match away to RB Leipzig, playing the full 90 minutes and scoring his first competitive goal for Monaco in a 1-1 draw.

Tielemans made his first Ligue 1 start and played the entire match in the 3-0 home win over Strasbourg on September 16, after appearing in 56 minutes as a substitute in his first four Ligue 1 matches.

Tielemans was named by France Football as one of the season’s biggest flops, both in the first half and overall. On 2 September 2018, he scored his first Ligue 1 goal in his 31st game, a 3-2 home loss to Olympique de Marseille.

Youri Tielemans-Leicester City

Tielemans joined Premier League club Leicester City on loan until the end of the season on January 31, 2019, with Adrien Silva swapping places. Tielemans scored his first goal for the club in a 3-1 win over Fulham on March 9.

Tielemans signed a four-year contract with Leicester City for an estimated fee of £32 million on July 8, 2019. On 31 August, he scored in a 3-1 home win over Bournemouth, but he sparked controversy with a high challenge on Callum Wilson that went unpunished despite consultation with the video assistant referee; referees’ chief Mike Riley ruled that this was an incorrect decision and Tielemans should have been sent off.

Tielemans scored the only goal of the 2021 FA Cup Final against Chelsea in the 63rd minute on 15 May 2021, giving Leicester their first FA Cup title. He was named the match’s MVP.

Youri Tielemans’s International Career

Tielemans was called up to the senior Belgium squad in June 2015 for a UEFA Euro 2016 qualifier against Wales. On November 9, 2016, he made his senior international debut in a 1-1 friendly away draw against the rival Netherlands, replacing Steven Defour in the 82nd minute.

Tielemans was named to manager Roberto Martnez’s 23-man squad for Russia’s 2018 FIFA World Cup. He appeared in four tournament matches, including a 2-0 victory over England in the third-place match.

Tielemans scored his first senior goal for Belgium on March 21, 2019, against Russia in a UEFA Euro 2020 qualifying match. He was called up for the postponed championship tournament in May 2021.

Youri Tielemans-Playing Style

Tielemans began as a holding midfielder before being moved to a more attacking role by Anderlecht manager Besnik Hasi, where he scored long-range goals and was compared to Frank Lampard and Axel Witsel.

Sky Sports noted his versatility as a defensive or attacking midfielder in a 2015 profile, concluding that his pace, passing, and shot power suited the latter role better. Tielemans had good skills with long passes, according to Paul Van Himst, a former Anderlecht and Belgium player.
